SirePowered Results: Super Saver

Barbara D. Livingston
Competitive Edge wins the Pat Day Mile on May 2 at Churchill.

Super Saver was among the standouts in a strong group of freshman sires last year – and the WinStar Farm stallion doesn’t show any signs of slowing with his first crop.

According to Daily Racing Form's SirePowered Results, 3-year-olds from Super Saver’s first crop have won 20 races this year through May 9. Among those are two stakes victories belonging to unbeaten Grade 1 winner Competitive Edge, who is among the most exciting representatives for his sire. Most recently, the colt rolled by 4 1/2 lengths in the Grade 3 Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby undercard, posting a Beyer Speed Figure of 102. He has won his four starts by a combined 28 3/4 lengths.

Competitive Edge is likely to bypass this week’s Preakness Stakes in favor of remaining around one turn for the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap or the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes, both on the Belmont Stakes undercard. In the former, he would face older horses.

Super Saver, whose career was highlighted by a victory in the 2010 Kentucky Derby, entered stud in 2011 at WinStar. The Maria’s Mon horse is also the sire of Grade 2 winner I Spent It and stakes winners Hashtag Bourbon and Super Bear.
