Gabriel Charles wins the Eddie Read Stakes on July 18 at Del Mar.

Gabriel Charles landed the first Grade 1 event of the Del Mar summer meeting when winning the Eddie Read Stakes on July 18. In the process, he also became the first Grade 1 winner for California stallion Street Hero.

Gabriel Charles, who is out of the Atticus mare Star of Atticus, earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 98 while winning the Eddie Read, his third start this season after returning from a bowed tendon that kept him on the sidelines for more than a year. Prior to the injury, he won the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby in 2013. He also won the listed Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Preview in 2012 and owns four other career stakes placings.

Street Hero never finished worse than third in six starts, all as a juvenile. He won the Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes and finished third in both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity. After undergoing knee surgery following the Juvenile, the son of Street Cry retired to Vinery in Lexington, Ky., for the 2009 season. Vinery owner Tom Simon announced his intentions to sell his U.S. operations in the summer of 2012, and Street Hero and other Vinery stallions were relocated to WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky., for the following season.

Street Hero subsequently moved to Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel, Calif., where he stood his first season on the West Coast in 2015. From four crops of racing age, he is the sire of 68 winners from 112 starters through July 20. In addition to newly minted Grade 1 winner Gabriel Charles, his top runners include multiple Grade 1-placed stakes winner Street Girl, and Peruvian Horse of the Year Azarenka.
