American Pharoah is a son of young sire Pioneerof the Nile, who was represented by a pair of classic starters last year.

Champion American Pharoah returned to action where he left off, leading throughout and pulling clear late to win his season debut in the Grade 2, $750,000 Rebel Stakes on Saturday at Oaklawn Park.

The colt, who races for his breeder, Zayat Stables, and is trained by Bob Baffert, is the son of another standout for the same connections – WinStar Farm stallion Pioneerof the Nile. According to Daily Racing Form's SirePowered Results, the young sire has been represented by eight individual winners thus far in 2015.

American Pharoah, who is out of the Yankee Gentleman mare Littleprincessemma, was making his first start since winning the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes on Sept. 27 at Santa Anita Park. The colt was forced to the sidelines with an injury the week of the Breeders’ Cup, but still earned the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male on the strength of Grade 1 wins in the Del Mar Futurity and FrontRunner.

Pioneerof the Nile's lone multiple winner this year is Opsec, who posted a Beyer Speed Figure of 81 winning a maiden special weight race on Jan. 25 on the Santa Anita turf, then improved to an 88 when winning an optional claimer on March 8 on the same course. The colt, out of the winning Cape Town mare Kalahari Cat, races for owner Kaleem Shah and is also trained by Baffert.

Pioneerof the Nile won 5 of his 10 career starts, including Grade 1 scores in the CashCall Futurity and Santa Anita Derby. He entered stud at WinStar in 2010 and is represented by five North American stakes winners in addition to American Pharoah. His top runners include Cairo Prince and Vinceremos, both graded stakes winners on the 2014 Triple Crown trail, and Social Inclusion, third in the Preakness Stakes.
