Hard Aces wins the Gold Cup at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Hard Aces won the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita on Saturday to highlight a big day for sire Hard Spun. According to Daily Racing Form's SirePowered Results, Darley's son of Danzig was represented by three winners on Saturday.

The historic Gold Cup at Santa Anita – formerly the Hollywood Gold Cup before being relocated from the now-shuttered track – was the first career Grade 1 score for Hard Aces, who earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 98 for his effort. Earlier this year, the horse won the Louisiana Handicap; he owns three other stakes placings.

Bred by Dreamchaser Thorobreds and owned by Hronis Racing, Hard Aces is out of the winning Quiet American mare All in With Aces.

Hard Spun's other winners on Saturday were Smooth Roller, who won a maiden special weight race on the Gold Cup undercard at Santa Anita with a Beyer of 87, and Tiz Ro, who won an optional claimer at Woodbine with a 74 Beyer.

Competing against one of the better crops in recent years, the consistent Hard Spun won six stakes during his own career, highlighted by the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes and the Grade 2 Kentucky Cup Classic, defeating Kentucky Derby winner and rival Street Sense in the latter. He finished second in the Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic and third in the Preakness Stakes, the latter two races won by Curlin. Hard Spun entered stud in 2008, and his career has been highlighted by the champion Questing and additional Grade 1 winners Wicked Strong, Hard Not to Like, Hardest Core, and Zo Impressive.
