Dortmund re-rallies to defeat Firing Line in the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita.

Dortmund remained unbeaten with a narrow victory in the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita Park, capping a big day for his sire, Big Brown.

Dortmund has now won his first four career starts, winning his debut Nov. 2 at Santa Anita; dominating an optional-claiming event over a mile at Churchill Downs later that month; and adding a narrow victory in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity in December. In the latter, he edged Firing Line, who he re-rallied to beat in the Robert B. Lewis, earning a 103 Beyer Speed Figure in the process.

Dortmund is out of the stakes-winning Tale of the Cat mare Our Josephina, who has produced four winners from five starters. It is the extended family of champion Lakeville Miss, dam of Grade 1 winner Mogambo.

Once-beaten champion Big Brown won the 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes en route to an Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male. He will stand the 2015 season at Dutchess Views Farm near Pine Plains, N.Y., after previously standing at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Ky. Led by Dortmund, the New York newcomer enjoyed a big day Saturday, registering three winners according to DRF’s SirePowered Results.

Percy Fawcett captured a maiden special weight at Golden Gate Fields, earning a 72 Beyer. The win came in the sixth career start for the 3-year-old gelding who is out of the stakes-placed winning Afternoon Deelites mare School of Deelites. However, Percy Fawcett had finished on the board in four of his previous five starts, including a runner-up effort to subsequent stakes winner Cross the Line last December.

Tumminia, out of the winning Street Cry mare Hattas Diamond, won a maiden claiming event on the Gulfstream Park turf, earning a 66 Beyer. The 3-year-old filly was making her fifth start.

Through Saturday, Big Brown was the sire of 137 winners from 238 starters for combined progeny earnings of $9,250,758. He is the sire of 14 stakes winners to date. Along with Dortmund, his top runners include Irish Group 3 winner Darwin.
