SirePowered Results: Afleet Alex

Barbara D. Livingston
Texas Red wins the Jim Dandy on Saturday at Saratoga.

Afleet Alex was among the most celebrated juveniles of the 2004 Saratoga meeting. Just over a decade later, the Gainesway sire is off to a solid start at this summer's meet. Daily Racing Form’s SirePowered Results shows him with two winners at the meet to date, led by Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes victor Texas Red.

Texas Red was scoring his first victory since romping by 6 1/2 lengths in last November's Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He finished second by a neck in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes in his first start of 2015 before being forced to miss the Triple Crown series with a foot abscess. He returned to finish second in the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes in July at Belmont Park, setting him up for the Jim Dandy score, in which he held off Frosted by half a length. In doing so, he earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 105, topping the 104 he posted in the Juvenile.

Afleet Alex's other winner at the Saratoga meet came on opening day, as Khaleesi Kat won a maiden-claiming race on the turf.

Afleet Alex burst onto the national scene with powerful victories in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes and Grade 2 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga as a juvenile, then earned an Eclipse Award the following season by winning the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. In all, he won 8 of 12 career starts, including six stakes wins, for earnings of more than $2.7 million.

Afleet Alex entered stud in 2006 at Gainesway, and, in addition to Texas Red, his top runners to date include Grade 1 winners Iotapa, Afleet Express, Materiality, and Dublin, as well as Breeders' Cup Marathon winner Afleet Again.
