Sir Gallovic any price in Derby Trial

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Sir Gallovic is going to be a short-priced favorite when he takes on seven 3-year-old colts and geldings in the $50,000 Richmond Derby Trial at Hastings Sunday. Bad Sneakers looks like the only realistic threat in the 1 1/16-mile feature, which goes as the seventh race.

Trained by Troy Taylor, Sir Gallovic couldn't have been more impressive in his first start at Hastings. Coming off of a two-month layoff following a win in a $60,000 maiden race at Belmont June 1, Sir Gallovic blew away what appeared to be a competitive field of allowance horses Aug. 5 by 7 1/2 lengths. Breaking sharply under leading rider Mario Gutierrez, Sir Gallovic went three wide around the first turn before Gutierrez took a hold and dropped him in behind horses going past the grandstand the first time. When Gutierrez turned him loose approaching the quarter pole, Sir Gallovic immediately responded with a move that surprised everyone, including Taylor.

"I liked him going into the race," said Taylor. "But I never expected that kind of a performance."

With two solid interim works, Sir Gallovic figures to move forward in his second start for Taylor. Gutierrez retains the mount.

Bad Sneakers, who is trained by Cindy Krasner and will be ridden by Chad Hoverson, had a horrible trip in his second-place finish behind Ookashada in the B.C. Cup Stellar's Jay Aug. 6. He went at least three wide the whole way, and any time Hoverson tried to move him closer to the rail he would either get shut off or horses would drive up inside of him. Nonetheless, he made a strong move to collar Ookashada at the top of the stretch and it was not surprising he couldn't sustain his move.
