Siphon colt leads Ocala sale

The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company opened its final juvenile sale of the 2005 season Tuesday in Ocala, Fla., with a $110,000 Siphon colt the early leader.

The two-day June sale of 2-year-olds and horses of racing age got off to a rocky start at first, with five of the first 10 lots in the ring failing to reach their reserves. But by 5 p.m., the Siphon colt sold as Hip No. 134 was one of 15 lots to bring $50,000 or more. The Journeyman Bloodstock agency purchased the colt, a son of the Time for a Change mare Timely Quarrel, offered by E.J. Sipus, agent. The bay colt is from the family of Grade 2 winner Suivi and is a half-brother to Time Out, a winner by Stormin Fever.

The second-highest price by that time was the $95,000 that Todd and Sandee Beattie paid for Hip No. 268, a Crafty Prospector colt out of the Alleged mare Chickapee. Woodside Ranch, agent, consigned the colt. Hip No. 268 is a half-brother to the Smart Strike filly Strike Me Lucky, who finished third in this season's Grade 3 Bewitch Stakes at Keeneland. Their dam, Chickapee, is a daughter of the Grade 3 winner Percipient.

The sale was to continue Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the OBS facility.
