Siphon City wins Monday's Grade 3 Memorial Day Handicap at Calder by 1 1/2-lengths.

Siphon City had never run in a graded stakes, while Congrats is already a Grade 2 winner and has placed in multiple Grade 1 stakes. But when those two hooked up through the stretch in Monday's Grade 3 Memorial Day Handicap at Calder, it was Siphon City who appeared as the seasoned stakes veteran, turning back the challenge from his classy rival for a 1 1/2-length victory under jockey Elvis Trujillo.

Siphon City ($6.80), the slight favorite, set the pace with Congrats less than three lengths off the lead heading down the backstretch. Congrats drew even with Siphon City at the head of the stretch but could not get past the stubborn leader, who was edging away at the end.

Twilight Road, the race's defending champion, was never a factor and finished a well-beaten sixth in a field reduced to seven starters following the scratches of Mister Fotis, Whos Crying Now, and Broadway View.

Siphon City covered the distance in 1:45.87 over a fast track. He is trained by Dan Hurtak for owner Raymond Larkin.

Congrats earned $20,000 of the $100,000 purse for finishing second, and is now less than $2,000 shy of reaching the $1 million mark in career earnings.
