Singin Vicar wins two in row

Trainer James Jones sent out Singin Vicar for his second consecutive derby victory of the meet Sunday. He defeated the Nebraska-invader City Slicker by 1 1/2 lengths in the open $35,000 Colorado Derby. In his previous start on July 4, the $35,000 Colorado Breeders Derby, he romped by six lengths over Major River.

Last summer, Jones accomplished the identical feat with Folsum for breeder Willard Burbach. Both horses were bred in Colorado. Burbach is the outright owner of Singin Vicar and co-owner of Folsum.

Trials for the final Quarter Horse futurity of the meet will be held here Friday. Six trials are on tap to determine the 10 finalists for the Mile High Futurity. The Grade 2 finals at 400 yards will be held Aug. 10, closing day of the meet.

The Silver Cup yearling sale for Thoroughbreds will be held here Aug. 9. Yearlings from this sale, conducted by the Colorado Breeders Association, will be eligible for the Silver Cup Stakes in 2009. The sale will be held at Arapahoe Park beginning at 6 p.m. Yearlings from last summer's sale will compete in the Silver Cup Futurity on Saturday.
