Simple Words steps up

Simple Words, who has posted back-to-back triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures since arriving at Monmouth Park from Kentucky, steps up to face stakes company for the first time in the $75,000 Princeton Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

After going 0 for 3 at Churchill Downs, Simple Words was sent to Monmouth in mid-July by trainer Steve Asmussen and soared to a 100 Beyer while cruising to a 9 3/4-length victory over maidens. She proved that was no fluke when she came back five weeks later to clear her first allowance condition, this time earning a 102 Beyer.

That most recent victory was validated when the runner-up, Nicole, returned to win an allowance race Sept. 22 at Belmont Park with a 99 Beyer.

The only problem Simple Words may have in the six-furlong Princeton is that she’s one of several need-the-lead types in the race.
That group includes Angels in Arms, who won her first start at Monmouth three weeks ago. She also just missed after sitting second in the Femme Fatale at Penn National.

A hot pace could set things up for either Karmageddon, who rallied from far back to get second at 44-1 in the Miss Woodford two starts ago, or Funny Feeling, who was third, three-quarters of a length behind Karmageddon, in that same race. Funny Feeling won the Just Smashing early in the Monmouth meet.
