Silvercup Baby catches favorite in Union Avenue

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Silvercup Baby, a 10-1 outsider in a field of six older New York-bred fillies and mares, ran down odds-on pacesetter Dance Gal Dance to win Monday's overnight stakes by one length under Javier Castellano.

Trained by Carl Domino, Silvercup Baby ($22.80) stalked in third outside of Dance Gal Dance, the 3-5 favorite who set fractions of 22.58 seconds and 45.14 while being pressed by 5-2 second choice Under Serviced.

Dance Gal Dance still had the lead in midstretch after five furlongs in 57.31, but Silvercup Baby caught her a sixteenth from the wire and edged away to win the six-furlong race in 1:10.28 over a main track upgraded from good to fast after the second race.

Dance Gal Dance held second by 1 1/2 lengths over Beam of Love, as Under Serviced faded to fourth.

So N So survives inquiry to win Scribner

Earlier, So N So ($2.70) was all out to repel Mineralogist by three-quarters of a length in the overnight stakes for 2-year-old New York-bred fillies, and survived a stewards' inquiry and a claim of foul.

So N So, a prohibitive favorite off a lengthy debut win at Belmont on June 24 for trainer Tom Bush, set early fractions of 22.33 and 45.70, came in slightly under right-handed pressure from Alan Garcia after five furlongs in 57.74, and held to the wire after six furlongs in 1:10.63.

Mineralogist checked and altered course late, and finished better than eight lengths clear of Sugar Trade in third.
