Silmaril collects 10th stakes

A perfectly timed ride by Ryan Fogelsonger helped the 6-year-old mare Silmaril capture the 10th stakes of her career.

Cutting back to six furlongs after two losses in routes, Silmaril ($3.60) came from last at the top of the stretch to overtake My Sister Sue by a head to take Pimlico's closing-day feature, the $75,000 Skipat for fillies and mares. Homesteader finished third, a half-length behind My Sister Sue.

The winning time was 1:10.89.

Silmaril's 14th victory in 31 lifetime starts pushed her career earnings to $818,653. Her trainer, Chris Grove, said he would like to see her become a millionaire and win a Maryland Million race for the third time before her career ends.

My Sister Sue, the 5-1 fourth choice in a field of five, still held a two-length lead with a furlong remaining but was slowing down noticeably inside, allowing Fogelsonger and Silmaril to make up considerable ground down the middle of the track.
