Silentio back from layoff for Frank Kilroe Mile

Silentio has not raced since a last-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

Silentio has not raced since finishing last of 14 in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint here last November. The layoff does not bother trainer Gary Mandella. It’s the competition and an expected big field for Saturday’s $400,000 Frank Kilroe Mile on turf that are greater concerns.

“He runs well off a long break,” Mandella said Wednesday. “The trip will be huge. It’s destined that someone will finish fifth and be beaten three-quarters of a length.”

Silentio, who has won 4 of 15 starts and earned $711,960, was second by a nose in the 2013 Kilroe Mile. A 6-year-old horse, Silentio is winless in five starts since the Grade 2 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park in November 2013.

The Grade 1 Kilroe Mile is expected to include Summer Front, who was fourth in the BC Mile last November; Winning Prize, who won the 2014 Kilroe Mile; and Za Approval, who was second in the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes here Jan. 31.

Avanzare, the winner of the Arcadia, will skip the race, trainer Tom Proctor said.

Saturday’s five-stakes program includes the $250,000 San Carlos Stakes for sprinters over seven furlongs. Conquest Two Step, the winner of the Grade 2 Palos Verdes Stakes at six furlongs Jan. 31, will be favored.
