Sidney's Candy scratched from Oak Tree Mile due to pending sale
Email
INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Sidney’s Candy, a four-time graded stakes winner in California this year, was scratched from the Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile on Saturday at Hollywood Park because of a pending sale, trainer John Sadler said Saturday morning.
Sadler said the deal was expected to be finalized by Monday but declined to identify the potential buyer. Under terms being discussed for the potential sale, Sadler said he would continue to train Sidney’s Candy for the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs on Nov. 6.
“The plan right now is for him to go to the Breeders’ Cup with me,” Sadler said. “He’s involved in a pending sale.”
Sidney’s Candy was the morning-line favorite for the Oak Tree Mile, where he was seeking his fifth graded stakes win.
Owned by breeder Jenny Craig, Sidney’s Candy has won five races and $803,560 from nine starts. In his most recent start at Del Mar on Aug. 14, he set a turf-course record by racing 1 1/16 miles in 1:39.52 in his debut on the surface.
Earlier this year, Sidney’s Candy won the Santa Anita Derby before finishing 17th in the Kentucky Derby. In the build-up to the Santa Anita Derby, Sidney’s Candy won two Grade 2 races – the San Vicente Stakes over seven furlongs in February and the San Felipe Stakes over 1 1/16 miles in March.
Best Bets
DRINK OR SINK went too fast on the lead last time before fading on the turf at Tampa, and should be less aggressive here with blinkers off. Olguin was aboard for his good fall races on the Poly, and should have him closing at a square price in his second start of the year. GOOD BETTER BEST finished up the track behind two next-out winners when he tried the dirt for the first time March 30 at Gulfstream. He hasn't faced this easy a field in a while, and is no stranger to filling out the exactor.
