Versatile Grade 1 winner Sidney's Candy was represented by his first foal on Jan. 17, a colt born at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky.
The chestnut colt is out of the Storm Cat mare Ominous Cat, whose dam is the multiple Grade 1-winning Seattle Slew mare Fleet Renee. A full sister to stakes winner Alzora and a half-sister to Grade 2 winner Future Quest, Fleet Renee's five winners from as many starters include Stormy Renee, dam of Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint winner Hightail.
The colt was bred in partnership by WinStar, which stands Sidney's Candy, and Winchell Thoroughbreds.
“He's a leggy, athletic foal [and] has all of Sidney's Candy's positive attributes,” WinStar farm manager Chris Baker said. “My expectations for 'Sidney's' offspring are high, and this colt has exceeded them.”
Sidney's Candy, a 6-year-old by Candy Ride, was a graded stakes winner on both coasts and on all three surfaces. He was a three-time graded stakes winner on synthetic tracks in California, including a triumph in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. His multiple Grade 2 victories on turf included a course record-setting score in the Grade 2 La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar, when he ran 1 1/16 miles in 1: 39.52. He added a victory in the Grade 3 Sir Beaufort Stakes on dirt, running a mile in 1:33.70 while romping by 7 1/4 lengths and missing the track record by 0.30 seconds.
In all, he won seven of 17 career starts for earnings of $1,104,810.
Sidney's Candy, who is out of the Storm Cat mare Fair Exchange, entered stud at WinStar in 2012 for a fee of $15,000. He will stand for the same fee this year.
