KIP DEVILLE sports an outstanding 7 for 8 record at one mile (both turf and dirt), and has really turned it up a notch since becoming more willing to relax in the early stages of his races. Not only did he defeat the classy Showing Up in the Makers Mark Mile at Keeneland last time out, but he also handled next-out graded stakes winners Sky Conqueror (105 Beyer) and Remarkable News (102 Beyer). Kip Deville has won three in a row, and looms the one to beat once again on Monday. Both CHINESE DRAGON and VEGA'S LORD returned from long layoffs to complete the exacta in the San Francisco, and it will be interesting to see how they react to that race. Perhaps Vega's Lord will move forward at a price. The 4-year-old may have been a bit short at Golden Gate as he drifted out a bit entering the stretch, and he may sit a nice stalking trip behind the pacesetters. Chinese Dragon certainly fits at the Grade 1 level as he just missed in the Kilroe at this distance last year. There is some pace lined up in the Shoemaker, and Chinese Dragon should benefit from hot fractions up front.
THE TIN MAN hasn't been out since winning the Clement Hirsch at Oak Tree, but he's won fresh at this distance in the past, and he is the class of the race. He may not have an easy time on the lead at this shorter distance with BECRUX and WILLOW O WISP in the lineup, and he may be overbet just a tad.
