Shining Energy best in San Clemente

Shining Energy wins the Grade 2, $150,000 San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar on Saturday.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Trainer Julio Canani won his third stakes race of the young Del Mar meeting on Saturday when Shining Energy overcame a disadvantageous post to rally for a 1 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2, $150,000 for 3-year-old filly turf runners.

Shining Energy ($19) started from the outside post in the field of 10, a post from which no horse had won a one-mile turf race in five years, a span of 39 races. Jockey Rene Douglas took Shining Energy back to last, and despite a moderate pace, she produced a dazzling turn of foot that carried her past her rivals.

Memorette and Royal Copenhagen finished in a dead-heat for second, with 2-1 favorite Louvain fourth.

Shining Energy covered one mile on firm turf in 1:34.25. She was sixth after six furlongs in 1:11.48.

Shining Energy won a pair of races at Santa Anita earlier this year, but then her form tailed off. Canani said she was found to have "a pulled muscle behind."

"There was nothing major," he said. "We did some work behind, some work in front. She was training unbelievable."

Shining Energy, a daughter of Rahy, is owned by Terry Lanni and Bernie Schiappa, both of Las Vegas.

Canani also won the John C. Mabee Handicap the first weekend of the meet with Amorama, and earlier on Saturday sent out Tsigane to a victory in the Wickerr Handicap.
