Trainer Mario Serey Jr. and jockey Trevor McCarthy won their second sprint stakes for fillies and mares in 10 days when She's Hot Wired got up to nail Bustin Out in the final strides of the Open Mind Handicap at Monmouth Park on Monday.

Serey and McCarthy also had won the $100,000 Skipat Stakes on Black-Eyed Susan Day at Pimlico on May 20 with Disco Chick.

Bustin Out looked headed to victory for much of the six-furlong Open Mind, but she began to weaken in the final furlong, drifting inward first and then coming outward late. She's Hot Wired and Love Came to Town continued after her doggedly, with She's Hot Wired getting up to win from the outside by a nose. Bustin Out held second by a neck over Love Came to Town.

Mychel Sanchez, the rider of Love Came to Town, lodged an objection against Bustin Out and jockey Jose Ferrer for coming outward in front of her in deep stretch, but it was not allowed by the stewards. When Bustin Out came outward, Sanchez went inside her to finish along the rail.

Both Disco Chick, the Skipat winner, and She's Hot Wired have improved markedly since last fall for Parx Racing-based Serey, the nephew of Juan Serey, a five-time leading trainer at Monmouth. She's Hot Wired paid $13.20 on Monday as the fourth choice in the six-horse field of New Jersey-breds.

When the gates opened, Bustin Out quickly sprinted clear over the sloppy track while being tracked by 4-5 favorite More Than a Party and 44-1 longshot Little Stitch. It was several more lengths back to She's Hot Wired and several more back to Love Came to Town.

On the far turn, Little Stitch began to falter, and More Than a Party was asked to reel in Bustin Out but was not making much progress. She's Hot Wired mounted her bid outside horses while Love Came to Town stayed to the rail into the stretch. Those two moved as a team after Bustin Out in the final furlong, and not much separated the trio at the finish.

"She was giving me everything she had at the top of the stretch," McCarthy said of She's Hot Wired. "She's really starting to come around. She likes to settle and make one run."

Serey said he knew this was going to be a tough race, but he was confident because of the way She's Hot Wired had been training.

"I felt so good about the filly today," Serey said. "She's growing up and getting better and better."

She's Hot Wired, 4, is owned by Lawrence Dilione Jr. She was timed in 1:10.91 after Bustin Out set fractions of 21.81 seconds, 45.07, and 57.57.

Amblin Easy finished fourth after breaking slowly and trailing the field early. More Than a Party weakened to finish fifth.

McCarthy closed out the Monday card by winning the final three races, including the Open Mind.
