Sharp on dirt, Sweetsouthernmoon tries turf again

Email

Friday night's $23,000 allowance feature at Evangeline Downs is one of the more competitive races on the card. Nine runners will go five furlongs on the turf in the eighth race, a first-level allowance.

Sweetsouthernmoon could be a slight choice after collecting two wins and two seconds in his last four races, all while running for claiming tags on dirt. A 4-year-old trained by Jerry Marler, Sweetsouthernmoon is coming off a gutty win at Louisiana Downs on May 2 when he sliced through traffic after a troubled trip to win a $25,000 nonwinners of two sprint.

Although Sweetsouthernmoon was unplaced in two tries on the turf earlier in his career, he looks like a different horse now.

Colby's Holiday made a big splash in his turf debut last time out, finishing second at this same level at Lone Start on May 8.

Leading trainer Keith Bourgeois, always dangerous off the claim, sends out You the Mon after taking the 4-year-old colt for a $10,000 tag on May 6. You the Mon has finished worse than second only once in his last six races. He will be making his first start on the grass.
