Shamoan's future may be on dirt

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Shamoan has a future on dirt after he finished a big second to Southern Africa in his main-track debut Saturday in the Grade 3, $300,000 at Lone Star Park.

"I figured he had the potential to do that," said Eoin Harty, who trains Shamoan, an Irish-bred gelding. "He's always worked really well on the dirt, and we figured we'd take a shot in there. I thought he was going to win there for a while."

Shamoan's pedigree had kept him on turf throughout his career, which began at The Curragh in Ireland. In his four North American starts leading up to the Lone Star Derby, he won his maiden on turf and placed third in a pair of turf stakes at Santa Anita.

Shamoan returned to Southern California on Monday, and Harty was still formulating plans for the gelding's next race.

"I think we'll try him back on the dirt," Harty said. "He's a good horse on the turf, but I think he's going to be a little better on the dirt."

Shamoan races for P.R. and Linda Laird.
