Shamoan ($6.20) survived a wide trip and a claim of foul by the rider of runner-up Apache Point to score a one-length victory in Friday's $250,000 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows.

Under jockey Jose Valdivia Jr., Shamoan pressed the pace outside of even-money favorite Thor's Echo and Raving Rocket through a half-mile in 46.80 seconds. Shamoan challenged outside of Thor's Echo midway on the final turn and took a narrow advantage entering the stretch.

Apache Point, ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan, rallied outside of Shamoan to challenge a furlong out and appeared to stick a nose in front near the sixteenth pole. Shamoan fought back and drifted out, making light contact with Apache Point 50 yards from the wire. Valdivia then straightened Shamoan and the pair inched clear at the wire. Shamoan clocked the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.14. Thor's Echo faded to third, finishing 2 1/4 lengths behind Apache Point.

Bridgmohan claimed foul, alleging interference in deep stretch, but the stewards allowed the original order of finish to stand. The victory ran Shamoan's career slate to 2-6-3 from 11 starts. The $150,000 winner's share of the derby purse more than doubled Shamoan's career earnings to $281,780. Eoin Harty trains Shamoan for owners P. R. and Linda Engel.

* Whimsy ($5.20) took command in upper stretch and went on to score a 2 3/4-length victory over 4-5 favorite Cee's Irish in Friday's co-feature, the Grade 3, $125,000 Iowa Oaks at 1 1/16 miles.

Jockey Carlos Marquez Jr. settled Whimsy off the early leaders while saving ground. The five-horse Oaks field was covered by three lengths after a half-mile in a moderate 48.81 seconds, led by Mary Alex. Corey Nakatani and Cee's Irish made a three-wide bid for the lead entering the final turn, and Marquez angled Whimsy off the rail approaching the stretch.

With a quick burst, Whimsy took command and went on to record a time of 1:43.60. Cee's Irish finished a clear second, 2 1/4 lengths clear of Mary Alex, who held third.

Michael Stidham trains Whimsy, who won for the fifth time in six career starts for her owner-breeder Pin Oak Stable LLC. Whimsy, a daughter of Maria's Mon, has now earned $171,772.
