HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Shaft of Light used his abundant speed to dominate Saturday’s $110,000 Rapid Transit at Gulfstream Park, sprinting to an easy lead before drawing off to an impressive 6 1/2-length decision over Flashy Jewel in the seven-furlong Claiming Crown dash.

Shaft of Light, a 5-year-old son of Smart Strike trained by Jorge Navarro, bounced back from one of his poorest performances of the season several months ago at Parx, where he finished fifth as part of a 1-5 favored entry.

Freshened since that outing, Shaft of Light had been working bullets for his return at Gulfstream Park West, and he responded with a huge effort under jockey Emisael Jaramillo to register his fifth win in nine starts this season.

Shaft of Light paid $4.80.

“He was ready for that, he was training that way,” said Navarro. “He’s a nice horse. I just got in his way last time out. I had him take back. He doesn’t want to run that way. He’s got issues, we worked on them, and he’s coming around. I always thought he was a stakes horse.”
