Shadow of Illinois wins San Simeon

ARCADIA, Calif. - Jockey Mark Guidry had nearly reached the lead aboard Shadow of Illinois in Monday's $107,000 when he lost his whip. The extra baggage was not missed.

"I didn't need it anymore," he said.

With a wide rally, Shadow of Illinois ($16.60) scored a one-length win in the San Simeon. He finished about 6 1-2 furlongs on turf in 1:12.62, giving trainer Anthony Saavedra his first stakes win at Santa Anita.

Guidry had Shadow of Illinois in fifth on the hillside portion of the course, and moved him into contention as the field crossed onto the main oval.

"I got real confident when they crossed the dirt," Saavedra said.

A 5-year-old gelding, Shadow of Illinois finished clear of 5-2 favorite Geronimo, who rallied from last to finish a head in front of Golden Arrow in the field of six.

Shadow of Illinois, who races for Dave and Ella Sivage, has won 4 of 19 starts and $219,384.
