Seven to find what market will bear

The 2006 2-year-olds in training sales are winding down. The Ocala Breeders' Sales June sale of 2-year-olds in training, which starts on June 20, ends the season in Florida. Less than a month later, July 18, Fasig-Tipton Kentucky ushers in the first of the selected yearling sales. The Fasig-Tipton selected yearling sale at Saratoga begins on Aug. 9, and 12 days afterward yearlings sell with OBS in Ocala.

There are seven stallions standing in the Ocala market who are graded-stakes winners and will have yearlings from their first crop selling at these sales. Each of these seven stallions has a crop of at least 35 registered yearlings.

Hartley-DeRenzo Thoroughbreds is the home of Essence of Dubai, a Grade 2 stakes winner and earner of $2 million. He is by Pulpit out of the 1987 Eclipse champion 2-year-old filly Epitome, by Summing. Essence of Dubai has the distinction of leading this group in foal production - The Jockey Club lists 103 yearlings by him.

Lambholm South's Chilean-bred Lido Palace has 55 registered yearlings in his first crop. Lido Palace is by the Forty Niner sire Richman's Gold out of Sonada, by Quick Decision. Sonada, also bred in Chile, is a remarkable producer. She was voted Chilean broodmare of the year in 1999, 2000, and again in 2001. In Chile, Lido Palace was voted champion 2-year-old colt, champion 3-year-old colt, and horse of the year in 2000. He has a half-sister who won championship honors in Chile at 2, 3, and 4. Lido Palace won over $2 million in the U.S., including the Grade 1 Whitney and Grade 1 Woodward.

"Some of his yearlings will be at the Fasig-Tipton July sale and others will be offered at the OBS August sale," said stallion manager and Lambholm South owner S. Roy Lerman. "I like what I see in them and I expect they will sell very well."

Adena Springs South has two big guns with yearlings going to market. Eclipse champion 2-year-old Macho Uno (Holy Bull-Primal Force, by Blushing Groom) has 75 registered yearlings. Milwaukee Brew (Wild Again-Ask Anita, by Wolf Power) won just under $2.9 million, with victories in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap two years in a row. Milwaukee Brew stood his first two seasons in Kentucky at Adena Spring North before moving on to Ocala. He has 84 registered yearlings.

D'Wildcat (Forest Wildcat-D'Enough, by D'Accord) won five stakes, including the Grade 1 De Francis Memorial, and he placed in additional graded stakes. D'Wildcat entered stud in Canada and has since moved to Vinery Stud near Ocala. D'Wilcat's pedigree is loaded with Florida roots - especially his third dam, Grass Shack, ancestress of champion and sire Deputy Minister and Kentucky Derby winner Charismatic, to cite two of more than 30 black-type earners on her pedigree page. There are 38 registered yearlings in D'Wildcat's initial crop.

Cloverleaf Farm II's Repent, by Louis Quatorze-Baby Grace, by Cipayo, has been a pleasant surprise to his handlers. It is rare for a horse with a middle-distance pedigree, much of which has Argentine elements, who was a middle-distance racehorse, who never won a sprint, to be patronized in a venue that caters to speed. No doubt his charismatic looks and the $1.25 million he earned as a 2- and 3-year-old was persuasive, as Repent has 81 yearlings in his first crop.

Pure Precision, who stands at Lou-Roe Farm, is Florida-bred top and bottom. He started only 8 times, winning 4 of them and placing in 3 others. The son of Montbrook and Al's Helen, by Distinctive, won the Tyro and the Grade 3 Sapling as a 2-year-old before injury curtailed his racing career. He has a yearling crop of 45 going for him.

An eighth stallion who deserves honorable mention is Express Tour, standing at Lambholm South. He is a stout 16-3 hands and is a flashy chestnut who much resembles his late sire, Tour d'Or. Express Tour swept the Florida Stallion Stakes series at Calder Race Course in 2000. As a 3-year-old he won the UAE Derby in Dubai and the Grade 2 Jerome Handicap in the U.S. He also placed in the Grade 1 Woodward.

Any breeding pundit would likely tell you that there are more positives to be found among his male ancestors than among his producing dam and her kin. Nevertheless, Express Tour showed his racing class and earned over $1.7 million competing on two continents. There are only 15 by Express Tour in his first crop.
