Semaphore Man still supreme at Oaklawn

Semaphore Man had scored all five of his career wins at Oaklawn Park heading into the $50,000 King Cotton on Saturday, and he added to that total when he turned back fellow horse-for-course Junior College in the stretch for a 2 3/4-length win.

Junior College finished second, 3 1/4 lengths clear of Probation Ready.

Semaphore Man ($6.20), who also won last year's King Cotton, moved to the lead easily from his rail post in the six-furlong race, and dueled through an opening quarter in 22.21 seconds. He continued to maintain the advantage through a half-mile in 45.46, then held his ground when Junior College came to him at the top of the stretch. Semaphore Man went on to cover the distance in 1:09.70.

Tim Doocy rode Semaphore Man for Double Bogey Stable and trainer Kelly Von Hemel.

Semaphore Man, a 6-year-old gelding by Formal Gold, improved his record to 6 for 19, good for earnings of $267,110.
