Seguidilla the hot horse

Seguidilla's continued high-performance level makes her the horse to beat and likely favorite in Saturday's $30,000 feature at the Bay Meadows Fair, a 7 1/2-furlong entry-level allowance on turf for fillies and mares. Six were entered for the race, the fourth on an 11-race card.

Seguidilla won her maiden in a turf event at Turf Paradise April 25 and has finished first or second in six straight races. In her most recent race, a one-mile starter allowance on turf at Santa Rosa July 28, she made a sustained wide run after some trouble at the quarter pole to win going away. She has since posted a bullet five-furlong work in 58.80 seconds here Aug. 13. Russell Baze takes the call, with regular rider Roberto Gonzalez ending up on Pleasant Thunder.

Pleasant Thunder has held her own in Southern California recently, and won here in the spring. Pleasant Thunder, trained by Mark Molina, shipped here April 23 to try turf for the first time. She stalked the pace and finished well to beat $25,000 claimers. The runner-up and third-place finisher both came right back to win.

Since then she's been racing on the turf in Southern California. She comes off a dull run at Del Mar July 30 against $62,500 foes, but back on June 16 she was second by a nose against $50,000 claimers on the turf at Hollywood.

The Emster could be a danger as well. She was second on this course as a maiden April 18 and comes off a strong second on the Santa Rosa turf Aug. 1. The Emster, trained by Sergio Ledezma, has Chad Schvaneveldt in the irons.
