'Secretariat' grosses $27M so far

“Secretariat,” the Disney movie based on the life of the 1973 Triple Crown winner and his connections, has grossed an estimated $27.5 million in ticket sales since opening on Oct. 8, according to box-office data.

The movie, which had a production budget of $35 million, had estimated ticket sales of $9.5 million over last weekend on 3,072 screens, the fourth-highest grossing movie of the weekend, behind “Jackass 3D” ($50 million), “Red” ($22.5 million), and “The Social Network” ($11 million), all of which appeared on a similar number of screens, according to the data.

“Secretariat” opened on Oct. 8 to generally positive reviews, though some critics have taken issue with its commitment to the historical record. The last major horse-racing movie was 2003’s “Seabiscuit,” which grossed $148.3 million worldwide.
