Second purse increase at Turfway

Turfway Park has increased purses for the second time within a month. Officials at the Florence, Ky., track announced Tuesday that purses have been increased by 10 percent, retroactive to Friday and effective through the end of the winter-spring meet, April 5.

Turfway's racing secretary, Rick Leigh, said the increases became possible because Turfway will not make up races lost this winter to cancellation. Primarily because of inclement or freezing weather, Turfway has lost seven full or partial programs since the winter-spring meet began Jan. 1.

Last month, Turfway increased purses by 5 percent and also increased purse contributions by the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund by 20 percent at the same time.

Money from the development fund makes up nearly 40 percent of purses in maiden-special and allowance races at Turfway.
