Sean Clancy, the co-publisher of Steeplechase Times and the Saratoga Special, will receive the Eclipse Award for Writing in the News/Commentary category for a column that appeared in the Dec. 30, 2008, edition of the Blood-Horse magazine it was announced Tuesday.

Clancy, a journalist who is a former jumps rider, wrote about his experiences at a 2008 estate sale for the late Sidney Watters Jr., a trainer on both the flat and over jumps who had died earlier that year on Feb. 14. The column was entitled "Life's Work."

The champion steeplechase jockey of 1998, Clancy turned to publishing in 2000 when he co-founded the Steeplechase Times in 2000 with his brother, Joe. This is his first Eclipse Award.

"It's a real thrill for anyone in the business to win an Eclipse award," said Clancy, in a statement. "It's the pinnacle to win one, whether it's as a jockey or a trainer or for writing. It's always out there, and you're always chasing it."

Clancy will receive his award at the Jan. 18 Eclipse Awards ceremony in Beverly Hills. The awards are administered by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form, and the National Turf Writers Association.
