'Scream' will be heard from

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Full Scream Ahead, who missed by a nose in the Grade 2 Ballerina Breeders' Cup on Oct. 6, figures to be a short price when she faces six other fillies and mares in Saturday's open allowance race at Hastings Park. The 1 1/16-mile feature carries a $25,300 purse and goes as the ninth race.

Full Scream Ahead, who is trained by Terry Marshall and owned by Aurora Stables, has been sharp since the middle of July. In her last five starts she has won three stakes and finished second in two others.

Her most recent win came in the Delta Colleen on Sept. 22 when she finished three lengths clear of Catahoula Rose, who is also entered here. Her second-place finish to Grace for You in the Ballerina was as close as it gets, and both riders involved, Felipe Valdez on Full Scream Ahead and Fernando Serna, thought the photo would go the other way.

Marshall thought that the Ballerina was going to be Full Scream Ahead's last race at Hastings before shipping her to northern California for the winter.

"I had the back shoes pulled and was planning to send her to the farm for a few weeks before heading south," he said. "But this race came up as an extra, and since she's feeling so good right now, it was hard to pass up."

Shelby Madison is the lone 3-year-old in the field, and like last year, she appears to be peaking in the fall. She was an easy winner going 6 1/2 furlongs in a $50,000 optional race for 3-year-old fillies Sept. 1 and finished a close second in a $50,000 optional sprint for fillies and mares Oct. 6.
