Saucey Evening goes last to first

Saucey Evening clinched the title of champion 2-year-old California-bred filly of 2008 with a come-from-behind victory in the fillies division of the $125,000 California Breeders' Champion Stakes at Santa Anita.

Saucey Evening ($4) rallied wide through the final quarter-mile to win the seven-furlong race by 2 1/2 lengths over Spanish Ice. Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Saucey Evening was timed in 1:21.84. Saucey Evening was last until Gomez urged her closer to the front on the final turn.

Ten Churros, who set an early pace of 22.72 and 44.76 seconds, held third in the field of seven.

Saucey Evening has vaulted to the top of the statebred 2-year-old filly division in her last three starts. She won the California Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita on Oct. 5, her first stakes win, and was fourth, beaten two lengths, by Maram in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Oct. 24.

Owned by George Strawbridge's Augustin Stable and trained by Graham Motion, Saucey Evening has won 3 of 6 starts and $300,390.
