Castlebrook wins at Calder

MIAMI - Castlebrook regained bragging rights as the top filly and mare handicap runner at Calder when she rallied to a two-length victory over Coolbythepool in Saturday's $54,000 Nancy's Glitter Stakes for registered Florida-breds.

Castlebrook moved to the top of her division earlier in the meet with victories in the Miss Jealski and Mia's Hope handicaps but disappointed when finishing a well-beaten fourth behind Racing for Pahm in the Liberada Handicap. In the Liberada her chances were somewhat compromised when she had to break from an outside post.

In the Nancy's Glitter, Castlebrook broke from post 1 in the field of seven fillies and mares. Jockey Rosemary Homeister Jr. used the inside post to good advantage, reserving Castlebrook just off the pace of Racing for Pahm. She launched her bid around the second bend after taking command in midstretch, and was easily able to withstand the final bid of Coolbythepool. Coolbythepool split rivals into the stretch and rallied willingly to finish second, a half-length before the tiring Racing for Pahm.

Castlebrook paid $7.40. Her final time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:48.16 over a fast track.

Woodbine: Mr. Epperson beats Heliotrope

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Mr. Epperson turned back a stretch bid from favorite Heliotrope to win the Grade 3 $146,000 Play the King Handicap at Woodbine Saturday.

Mr. Epperson vied up front with Hunter Todd through moderate fractions in the seven-furlong dash for older runners. Heliotrope stalked the pace on the turn and drew even with Mr. Epperson in midstretch, but Mr. Epperson prevailed by three-quarters of a length. Alea Iacta Est rallied wide to end up a neck back in third, while Dawson's Legacy finished fourth in the 12-horse field. Wake at Noon was scratched. The final time was 1:21.84.

Mr. Epperson, who won the Grade 2 Nearctic Handicap here June 24, returned $12.60. He earned $87,600 for trainer Scott Fairlie and partners.
