Saturday stakes recaps (8/14/04)

* Pie N Burger left little doubt that he is still the reigning handicap champ in the region as he successfully defended his title in the $100,000 Evangeline Mile. Left in the wake of Pie N Burger was longshot Meteor Impact, three lengths back in second.

* True Sensation ($11.20), the longest shot in a field of four, sat third, took the lead in the stretch, and pulled away to win the $75,000 All Brandy at Pimlico by 1 1/2 lengths.

* Krz Ruckus ($7) vaulted over the $1 million mark in career earnings with a game victory in the $133,000 Shepperton Stakes at Woodbine. Dillinger hit the front at the eighth pole, but Krz Ruckus fought back to prevail by a nose.

* Cherylville Slew ($11) ran her win streak to three, rallying strongly under E.J. Perrodin to capture the Sangue Stakes at Louisiana Downs. Outright Buck was second, followed by favorite Due to Win Again.

* Mubtaker won the Group 2 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury, England, for the third straight year, beating Dubai Success by 2 1/2 lengths as the 3-10 favorite.

* Rubius assumed command three wide and went on to a three-quarter-length win over 10 Ohio-bred 2-year-olds in the $40,000 Cleveland Kindergarten Stakes at Thistledown.
