Saturday stakes recaps (7/10/04)


* Cuyahoga ($6.80), ridden by Heberto Castillo for trainer Bill Mott, outdueled fellow New York shipper Gijima through the stretch and drew clear to earn a one-length victory in the $75,000 Denise Rhudy Memorial, a 1 1/8-mile turf stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Delaware Park.

* Miss Fortunate ($9.40) and Brian Peck came flying late and nailed Mayo on the Side at the wire to win the the $75,000 HBPA Handicap, a one-mile race for fillies and mares, by a half-length at Ellis Park.

* Onebadshark ($9.80) returned from a minor injury, wearing down a game El Dorado Shooter to capture the $50,595 Sam J. Whiting Memorial Handicap at the Alameda County Fair in northern California. He won the six-furlong race by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:08.14.

* Heavily favored Kissed By a Prince withstood a strong rally by Royal Dalliance to win the $75,000 H.A. Hindmarsh Stakes by a neck at Fort Erie. Kissed By a Prince paid $3.80 and was timed in 1:44.65.

* Crawfish King ($6.80) notched an impressive 7 1/2-length victory over Secret Tunnel in the $50,000 Pioneer Stakes at Louisiana Downs. Crawfish King covered the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05.01 over a fast strip.

* Lt. Sampson ($6) edged rival Vazandar at Canterbury Park in the $40,000 Victor S. Myers Jr. Stakes for statebreds, the traditional six-furlong prep for the Minnesota Derby. Also at Canterbury, Shakopee ($48.60) turned the Minnesota Oaks picture upside down with an upset win in the $40,000 Frances Genter Stakes at six furlongs.
