Saturday stakes recaps (6/11/05)


* The Straw Man solidified his position atop the Lincoln State Fair 3-year-olds with a strong three-length win over five others in the $20,700 State Fair Breeders' Special for Nebraska-bred 3-year-olds. He ran the mile over a fast track in 1:41.20 and paid $2.80. My Hobby held well after going with the winner through the far turn to finish second, with Cork the Barber another 2 1/4 lengths back in third.

* Flip Side ($5.40), Lori Wydick up, beat Nitty Gritty by a head in the $45,000 J. William Petro Memorial Handicap at Thistledown. Cho Chang was third in the 1 1/16-mile race for Ohio-bred 3-year-old fillies.

* Discreet Hero ($5), ridden by Chad Murphy for Kentucky-based trainer Bernie Flint, cruised to a 6 3/4-length victory in the $75,000 Slipton Fell Handicap at Mountaineer. It was the 11th win in 42 starts for Discreet Hero, 7, who is 4 for 5 at Mountaineer.
