Saturday stakes recaps (4/5/03)


Other Saturday stakes

* Lone Star Deputy ($10.20) rode a ground-saving trip to a neck victory over Leo's Last Hurrahy in the $100,000 Grand Prairie Turf Challenge for 3-year-olds at Lone Star Park.

* Winter Garden ($26.40) held off a stern stretch bid from 2-5 favorite Hour of Justice to score a half-length victory in the $143,500 Star Shoot Stakes at Woodbine.

* Balmy ($8.60) remained unbeaten in three starts this year and gave Philadelphia Park-based trainer John Servis his fourth stakes win of the year in Maryland by capturing the $75,000 Primonetta Stakes at Pimlico. Vesta, the 4-5 favorite, broke awkwardly and finished last.

* Devil Time ($6.20) took command entering the stretch and was ridden out to a 7 1/2-length victory over 12 Ohio-bred rivals in the $40,000 Edward Babst Memorial at Beulah Park.

* Zina Cause ($22), hustled clear soon after the start by Guy Smith, held off a late charge from Lonely Concorde to win the $35,000 Inaugural Handicap at Evangeline Downs.
