Saturday stakes recaps (4/2/05)

Prineville wins the Dowd Mile Handicap at Fonner Park on Saturday.

* Heavenly Humor ($5.60) broke a step slowly but wound up getting a good stalking trip and held off 7-5 favorite Puxa Saco late to win the $60,400 Woodside Handicap at Bay Meadows by a half-length.

* Savorthetime ($2.60) won like a 1-5 shot should when she overtook pacesetter Boston Express in the stretch and went on to a 3 1/4-length victory in the $50,000 Carousel Stakes at Oaklawn Park.

* Roar on Tour ($61.40) closed into a hot pace to post an upset in the $125,000 Gulf Coast Breeders' Cup, the closing night feature at Delta Downs.

* Sent off the 7-5 favorite off a victory in her racing debut, Jet Set Citi ($4.80) made it two in a row by winning the $50,000 Smart Halo for 3-year-old fillies at Laurel by a nose over Missile Bay.

* Virden ($5), heavily favored off a string of strong stakes outings despite never running on turf, had little trouble handling fellow 3-year-old fillies in Turf Paradise's $40,000 Scottsdale Handicap on the turf, winning by nearly seven lengths.

* Leaving on My Mind ($3.60), a 3-year-old, picked up the sixth stakes win of his career at Sam Houston Race Park when he rallied for a three-quarter length win in the $40,000 Fort Bend County for Texas-breds.

* Prineville ($58.60), coming off a second-place finish in a $5,000 starter allowance in his first start of the season, found himself on an uncontested lead and upset the $30,000 Dowd Mile Handicap at Fonner Park, the local prep race for the $100,000 Bosselman/Gus Fonner Stakes on April 23.
