Saturday stakes recaps (3/15/03)

Other Saturday stakes

* A shoe that came off during the race prevented P Day from performing his best in last month's John Campbell Handicap. P Day ($12.20) proved that seventh-place finish as the favorite was a fluke when he returned to outbattle Lyracist by a nose in the $75,000 Harrison E. Johnson Memorial Handicap at Laurel Park. It was the 15th lifetime victory and 13th at Laurel for the 8-year-old P Day.

* Kwik Kash ($5.20) earned $30,000 in 58.85 seconds when she won the $50,000, five-furlong Azalea for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares by a length at Delta Downs.

* Mail Call ($9.60) gave trainer Gary Montgomery the first stakes victory of his career when he drove to a neck victory over Deferred Comp in the $50,000 Tejano Run Stakes, the 1 1/8-mile feature at Turfway Park. Montgomery was an assistant under Paul McGee and Ken McPeek before going out on his own several years ago.

* Stylish Sultan ($2.60), making his first start of the year, caught the pacesetting filly African Princess on the turn and drew off to a 3 3/4-length victory in the $50,000 Ernie Lowe Stallion Stakes at Suffolk Downs.
