Saratoga: Spa Babies for Aug. 31, Race 8

Welcome to Spa Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet and hope for a tidy profit.

In past years, I would list the stats for each horse before writing up my analysis, selections and wagering strategy. In order to streamline the content, this year's Spa Babies will showcase written analyses of each juvenile race. Each analysis will include relevant statistical information. Following the analysis, top three selections and wagering strategy will be provided.

Race 8
1 1/16 Miles (Turf)
P. G. Johnson Stakes
2-year-old fillies
Purse $75,000

There are some stamina concerns with MY DUE PROCESS as the Henny Hughes filly stretches out for the first time, but she looked good winning her turf debut here on August 5 and may attempt to take these on a merry chase from start to finish.  ALAURA MICHELE, like the top selection, won her turf debut with a pacesetting try.  She was a bit rank in the early portion of that race, however, and will need to settle better in her first start going a route of ground.  Trainer Bill Mott adds Lasix to the arsenal and Alaura Michele figures close to the lead heading into the backstretch.  She's by Arch out of a dam that was stakes-placed at ten furlongs so she should handle stepping up in trip. VISIONARIA is the "X-factor."  A winner in two of three starts in Italy, she'll make her North American debut for a powerful outfit, adds Lasix, and wouldn't be a surprise in the least.  Expect her rider, Ramon Dominguez, to have Visionaria relaxed off the leaders while racing in the second flight, but note that the sire was best sprinting.  CRAZY PARTY enjoyed a perfect ground-saving, pace-tracking trip in her career debut at this distance.  The beautifully-bred filly goes out for top connections and may work out a similar journey breaking from the inside here.  NEW WAVE won her career debut on the Arlington polytrack over next-out turf graduate Stephanie's Kitten (74 Beyer). She failed to make an impact against a very promising filly on dirt in the Grade 2 Adirondack last time out, but can improve switching to the lawn as she's a half-sister to Grade 1 turf winner General Quarters.  ZULTANITE didn't do much in her career debut on dirt, but the dam won on grass and this barn does well with turf performers.  Still, she's a maiden stepping up to face winners.  PUTTHEBABIESDOWN came with a strong late run when second in the Tippett Stakes going 5 1/2 furlongs at Colonial Downs.  There's enough pedigree here to indicate that she'll appreciate today's extra distance and she should get some pace to attack when the real racing begins.  BOURBONSTREETGIRL defeated maiden claimers over this course and trip 20 days ago, but will take a steep step up in class here. IDLE DICE, another maiden facing winners, has lost ground from the stretch call to the wire in her last two races.
