SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Rebounding from a fourth-place finish as the favorite in the Grade 2 Monmouth Cup, San Pablo stalked second choice Isn't He Perfect from the outset, wrested the lead turning for home, and drew away to win Thursday's $100,000 Birdstone Stakes by three lengths for trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez.
Isn't He Perfect, coming off a runner-up finish behind Toby's Corner's track record in last Saturday's Mountainview Handicap, set fractions of 23.89 seconds, 47.39, and 1:11.21 while under constant pressure from the winner, and saved the place by a half-length over Alma d'Oro.

Alma d'Oro, also trained by Pletcher, was third by a nose over Hello Lover. It was more than 30 lengths back to Pleasant Prince, as the field of five crossed the wire in pari-mutuel order.
San Pablo paid $4.70 to win as the favorite, and improved to 6-3-1 from 11 starts. This was the fourth time he has beaten Isn't He Perfect, along with three decisions on Aqueduct's inner track this past winter.

HOLY ACADEMY displayed respectable grass form last spring, before performing well on the Poly. She's stretching out off a third behind a runner-up who came back to finish second in the Ballade Stakes, and could be dangerous as the controlling speed in this optional claimer. QUEEN OF THE WAVES rallied wide from mid-pack to beat N1X allowance stock following a layoff when she last saw action March 29 at the Fair Grounds. She can obviously fire while fresh, and should be prominent under Da Silva, who broke her maiden.
