Ruler On Ice, the 2011 Belmont Stakes winner but idle since finishing far back in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap this past winter at Gulfstream Park, worked a half-mile in 48.40 from the gate in company with stablemate Valley Stream over the main track at Saratoga on Friday.

“He got a little worked up and didn’t break great when I worked him last time at Monmouth Park and I just didn’t want that to be his last time from the gate before he ran,” said trainer Kelly Breen. “I want to see him a little more on his toes coming out of there and I saw what I wanted this morning. Once he broke, it was just an easy maintenance work. I told the rider to sit on him, take it easy, and he completed his final eighth in 11 and 4 while being asked only slightly.”
Jersey Town re-routed to Vanderbilt
Trainer Barclay Tagg was hoping to have Jersey Town ready to run Friday in the Grade 3 James Marvin. Instead, Tagg worked Jersey Town five furlongs in 1:00.42 on the main track and will point his speedster to the Grade 1 Alfred Vanderbilt on Aug. 6.
“I wanted to run him in the race today but I wasn’t able to make it because of feet problems,” said Tagg. “Every time I work him he either loses a shoe or gets a quarter crack or something. But he went real good today and I’ll probably go for the Vanderbilt.”
Best Bets
NO NAY NEVER didn't break all that well in his debut but he moved up smoothly to make the lead after about 100 yards, and after he withstood a stretch challenge from the eventual runner-up he won while virtually in hand; trainer Wesley Ward is lethal with 2-year-olds and this colt figures very tough here with an effort as good as that first one. SWEET EMMA ROSE, an uncoupled stablemate of the top pick, meets males but she's clearly a threat off that debut romp; barn seems to hold all the aces.
