SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. − West Virginia Derby winner Prayer for Relief is unlikely to run in the Travers Stakes after a mediocre workout Thursday morning at Saratoga.

Prayer for Relief went five furlongs in 1:02.34 under jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, who needed to encourage the horse with his whip in the stretch to finish up. Bridgmohan indicated that Prayer for Relief was the type of horse who probably needs company in the morning.

“I had to get after him,” Bridgmohan said, noting that he thought Prayer for Relief handled the track fine but was a little lackadaisical.

Trainer Bob Baffert, speaking by phone from Southern California, said that Prayer for Relief may not have bounced back from his race in the West Virginia Derby on Aug. 6.

Though Baffert’s first inclination was not to run Prayer for Relief, he said he wouldn’t make a final decision until he sees the horse train next week.

“Never say never,” he said.

Baffert also said he would wait until he watches Haskell Invitational winner Coil work next Tuesday before deciding whether to run him in the Travers.

“He’s still in it until I take him out of it,” Baffert said.
