Saratoga: Poseidon's Warrior will skip Forego to await Vosburgh

Poseidon's Warrior, shown winning the Alfred Vanderbilt Handicap, will be pointed to next month's Vosburgh at Belmont Park.

On Saturday, one day after his recent Grade 1 winner Poseidon’s Warrior drifted badly while galloping out past the wire following the conclusion of a routine half-mile work, trainer Butch Reid said his horse would skip the Grade 1 Forego on Sept. 1 to await the Grade 1 Vosburgh four weeks later.

Poseidon’s Warrior breezed an easy half-mile over the main track in 49.80 seconds after the renovation break on Friday but drifted well out past the middle of the track once passing the finish line and before being pulled up on the clubhouse turn. It was the first work for Poseidon’s Warrior since he upset the Grade 1 Vanderbilt earlier in the meet.

“He seems to be just fine but I just wasn’t happy with the breeze and as a result I’m not comfortable running him next week,” said Reid. “So we’ll just pass this one and wait for the Vosburgh, which is at a distance that suits him better anyway.”

The Forego will be run at seven-eighths of a mile, the Vosburgh is decided at six furlongs.
