SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Kentucky Derby winner Orb completed his preparations for Saturday’s $1 million Travers Stakes by working a half-mile in 47.66 seconds Monday morning over the Oklahoma training track in Saratoga.

Coming out after the 7:30 a.m. renovation break, Orb, under exercise rider Jennifer Patterson, went in equal quarters of 23.83 seconds and galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.14, according to Daily Racing Form.

“I thought it went really well,” trainer Shug McGaughey said. “I thought he worked a sharp half-mile, came back, dropped his head, and walked home. Walked around the ring with his head picked up and I think everything is going the right way.”

The move was the first for Orb since he arrived in Saratoga on Aug. 11. Prior to that, Orb spent two months at the Fair Hill training center in Maryland, where he breezed six times, including a five-furlong move in 59.20 seconds in company on Aug. 10.

“His work at Fair Hill last Saturday was great,” McGaughey said. “He shipped up here in good order and hasn’t missed a beat, and he had a very good work this morning.”

Patterson, the regular exercise rider for Orb, said she believes the horse is training as well as he did during the winter and spring.

“His stride when he’s right is so big and he does things so easily he always fools me with his times,” Patterson said. "When he’s right I just feel like we’re galloping around there, and I had that feeling again this morning, which is really nice.”

Also working for the Travers was Will Take Charge, runner-up in the Jim Dandy, who went five furlongs in 1:01.88 at 5:30 a.m. when the training track was enveloped in fog.

Race of the year coming up! Lets all just hope for a safe injury free race! We have lost several great horses this year due to injury! Like them all but I have to say I picked Verrazano the first of the year and have to stick with him but, Orb on a good day is a hand full! Cant wait! Getting more excited every day!

I think both Palace Malice and Orb will run big, as for the others, I have to see the PPs.
Horse Cents More than 1 year ago
so you don't think Verrazano will run big, but might change your mind after seeing the pp's. So depending on reviewing his past performances and post position he might not run big? But no matter what Palice Malice and Orb will definitely run big, but you think.....oh never mind.

half mile in 47.66 seconds ...on training track......HE'S BACK in a BIG WAY !....still think Palace Malice is horse to beat.........as for that Verrazano.....lmao go ahead back him if you like ...he's no better than fourth in this race at his best. 1) PALACE MALICE 2)ORB 3) GOLDEN SOUL.....
Rob Beaudoin More than 1 year ago
Agree with Palace Malice and Verrazano, not so sure about Orb though. I guess somebody has to finish 2nd. The best part is Verrazano is going to be 9/5 I bet Orb is 5/2 and Palace Malace might be 3rd choice. If I can get 5/2 or higher I will be taking a big shot with him. If Verrazano wins I will admit I was wrong but I don't think 10furlongs against these horses over this surface is ideal for him. 8.5 or 9 @ Monmouth is a lot different.

Orb will be 5/1and pay $12....
Rob Beaudoin More than 1 year ago
I would bet any amount he's 7/2 tops. And if he is 5/1 he has NO SHOT
Horse Cents More than 1 year ago
are you saying at 7-2 he has a shot but if 5-1 he has no shot?
Mark More than 1 year ago
Orb has zero shot at any price . Zip .

Verrazano is going to run and hide from the field. The KY Derby was totally screwed up, including the fact that Verrazano got hurt. Verrazano will be THE HORSE OF THE YEAR !

What is it with Orb that so many people make excuses for his poor races. Unless the track comes up sloppy and there is a total pace meltdown, he is too slooowww.
Lawrence Vaccarelli More than 1 year ago
4 out of 6 jay...2 grade 1's....your point ?
jay More than 1 year ago
My point is the only time that Orb has run a fast enough race to be competitive in the Travers was in the Derby, which was obviously extremely biased towards closers that day in the slop.
Mark More than 1 year ago
one of those grade 1s filled with optional claimers the fd and the other grade 1 the Kentucky derby was a toss . sloppy track 20 horse scramble with a complete pace collapse . good luck with him in form let alone 1 1/4 off layoff .

FD runners where they paced in FD and what they did last out 3rd Merit Man ran 11th in the woody stephens 4th Navarez ran 8th in the Peter Pan 5th Shanghai Bobby Injured in running 6th Pick of the Litter 6th Haskell beat 30 by Verrazano 7th Frac Daddy 14 th Kentucky Derby 8th Are you kidding Me 2nd in an overnight restricted turf race 9th Indy Illision 6 th optional claimer Saratoga 10th Pontiff 11th in a maiden special weight

Florida Derby wasn't sloppy. He stalked very fast pace in that and FOY and won on a speed bias track from off the pace.
Mark More than 1 year ago
Foy was the definition of a pace meltdown. Lmao. Total collapse. And FD field was filled with claimers. The 3rd place finisher was a terrible sprinter from Bob Hess barn who was 5 clear of the rest of the field . Imld was off a 6 week layoff and was way short in there . And imld never runs well first out. What happened in Preakness with imld having a race in him and dry track with reasonable pace? Yep he buried orb. Orbs allowance win was against a bunch of bumz too. Off the board.

First, everything will depend on post positions here but: watch the Jim Dandy replay from last month at Saratoga. Moreno set pretty fast fractions in the 1 1/8 race and Palace Malice sat on his flank the whole way and then exploded around the far turn and coasted home, posting a record time on a fast track, Will Take Charge's run being too late. Now, Verrazano (bigger Beyer than PM at Monmouth but vs. nobody) will go with Moreno and Palace Malice will just sit off them (ideally on the outside of the speed; something he was able to do in the Belmont and Jim Dandy) and the 1 1/4 only helps PM. How is Orb going to get all the way to the lead from so far back? Maybe his freshening will have him placed closer to the front but I do not see it. Moreno is better bred for distance than Verrazano and the latter will fade; PM wins with WTC (who if anyone beats PM, it'll be him) and Orb making late runs. I don't think the others are good enough to crack the top 4 in this race. Palace Malice wins with Verrazano 4th and a repeat from the Jim Dandy in 2nd and 3rd.
Horse Cents More than 1 year ago
So you think Moreno beats Verrazano and the latter will fade? It's real step out to keep Verrazano off the board.
Bryan Horn More than 1 year ago
I do not think he can get the distance and he will have Palace malice at his flank the entire race; he can't sustain it. If he does, I will be the first Verrazano non-believer on this site to publicly eat my crow.
tim More than 1 year ago
I think Verrazano is either a win by 5 or off the board horse in this race.
jay More than 1 year ago
It was not a record time. It was the second fastest Jim Dandy.
Bryan Horn More than 1 year ago
Sorry: Louis Quatorze in '96.
Lawrence Vaccarelli More than 1 year ago
dude your scenario is very plausible and well noted.
Mark More than 1 year ago
Soft early fractions. Moreno is an over the top horse . he is a non factor as he will spit it by top of stretch . Verrazano will relax while pm will be second . Verrazano will have lead inside 1/8 pole over PM and draw away. As it is not april any more for either V or pm and this isn't poly at keeneland but I recall PM getting run down by javas war and wtc gaining late in JD. No one catches a relaxed rated Verrazano that we saw in the Haskell. Splits were slow only beause track was slow . FREAK .
Bellwether4U More than 1 year ago
Sounds like Orb is ready to roll him up one!!!...They got the name of the race right as its going to be a Jim Dandy!!!...

Forget who wins, who will be the morning line favorite?

Verrazano
Horse Cents More than 1 year ago
Palice Malice and Verrazano will vie for favortism with Orb just behind them. Verrazano will be the slight favorite at about 5-2, Palice Malice 3-1 and Orb 4-1.
Perl More than 1 year ago
I'm guessing Malice goes slightly favored. He's 8-5, VZ is 9-5, Orb is 7-2.
Horse Cents More than 1 year ago
Perl, I think I was generous on the odds and you are probably closer, but still think Verrazano will the post time favorite. If Palice goes favorte and Verrazano goes anything above 2-1 I think I might have to go to the window. I know you don't think he'll get 1 1/4 but he's the horse to beat.
Rob Beaudoin More than 1 year ago
Off odds Verrazano 9/5 and Palace Malice and Orb between 2 and 3/1. Palice Malice stamps himself as the leader in the division with a game victory IMO
Bryan Horn More than 1 year ago
Verrazano: 7-5. Palace Malice: 2-1. Orb : 3-1. Will Take Charge: 8-1. Moreno: 10-1.
jay More than 1 year ago
Will Take Charge will be 2-5 at post time. I'm putting one million dollars to win on him.
