Saratoga: Orb completes Travers preparations with sharp half-mile work
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Kentucky Derby winner Orb completed his preparations for Saturday’s $1 million Travers Stakes by working a half-mile in 47.66 seconds Monday morning over the Oklahoma training track in Saratoga.
Coming out after the 7:30 a.m. renovation break, Orb, under exercise rider Jennifer Patterson, went in equal quarters of 23.83 seconds and galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.14, according to Daily Racing Form.
“I thought it went really well,” trainer Shug McGaughey said. “I thought he worked a sharp half-mile, came back, dropped his head, and walked home. Walked around the ring with his head picked up and I think everything is going the right way.”
The move was the first for Orb since he arrived in Saratoga on Aug. 11. Prior to that, Orb spent two months at the Fair Hill training center in Maryland, where he breezed six times, including a five-furlong move in 59.20 seconds in company on Aug. 10.
“His work at Fair Hill last Saturday was great,” McGaughey said. “He shipped up here in good order and hasn’t missed a beat, and he had a very good work this morning.”
Patterson, the regular exercise rider for Orb, said she believes the horse is training as well as he did during the winter and spring.
“His stride when he’s right is so big and he does things so easily he always fools me with his times,” Patterson said. "When he’s right I just feel like we’re galloping around there, and I had that feeling again this morning, which is really nice.”
Also working for the Travers was Will Take Charge, runner-up in the Jim Dandy, who went five furlongs in 1:01.88 at 5:30 a.m. when the training track was enveloped in fog.
THE BEST IS YET TO COME
Race of the year coming up! Lets all just hope for a safe injury free race! We have lost several great horses this year due to injury! Like them all but I have to say I picked Verrazano the first of the year and have to stick with him but, Orb on a good day is a hand full! Cant wait! Getting more excited every day!
I think both Palace Malice and Orb will run big, as for the others, I have to see the PPs.
half mile in 47.66 seconds ...on training track......HE'S BACK in a BIG WAY !....still think Palace Malice is horse to beat.........as for that Verrazano.....lmao go ahead back him if you like ...he's no better than fourth in this race at his best. 1) PALACE MALICE 2)ORB 3) GOLDEN SOUL.....
Verrazano is going to run and hide from the field. The KY Derby was totally screwed up, including the fact that Verrazano got hurt. Verrazano will be THE HORSE OF THE YEAR !
What is it with Orb that so many people make excuses for his poor races. Unless the track comes up sloppy and there is a total pace meltdown, he is too slooowww.
A 3 yr old with a 2-month break running a 1 1/4 race...no chance.
First, everything will depend on post positions here but: watch the Jim Dandy replay from last month at Saratoga. Moreno set pretty fast fractions in the 1 1/8 race and Palace Malice sat on his flank the whole way and then exploded around the far turn and coasted home, posting a record time on a fast track, Will Take Charge's run being too late. Now, Verrazano (bigger Beyer than PM at Monmouth but vs. nobody) will go with Moreno and Palace Malice will just sit off them (ideally on the outside of the speed; something he was able to do in the Belmont and Jim Dandy) and the 1 1/4 only helps PM. How is Orb going to get all the way to the lead from so far back? Maybe his freshening will have him placed closer to the front but I do not see it. Moreno is better bred for distance than Verrazano and the latter will fade; PM wins with WTC (who if anyone beats PM, it'll be him) and Orb making late runs. I don't think the others are good enough to crack the top 4 in this race. Palace Malice wins with Verrazano 4th and a repeat from the Jim Dandy in 2nd and 3rd.
Sounds like Orb is ready to roll him up one!!!...They got the name of the race right as its going to be a Jim Dandy!!!...
Forget who wins, who will be the morning line favorite?
