Saratoga: Monday's Glens Falls Stakes to remain ungraded

The American Graded Stakes Committee has decided that Monday’s Glens Falls Stakes at Saratoga will remain ungraded, the committee said Thursday.

Originally a Grade 3 scheduled for 1 3/8 miles on Saratoga’s inner turf, the Glens Falls was one of six turf races moved to the main track on Saratoga’s closing day. Six of the original eight entrants in the Glens Falls were scratched, with five horses drawing in off the main-track-only list, including the favorite and winner, Lady Cohiba. It was run at 1 1/8 miles on a muddy track.

Under rules established by the American Graded Stakes Committee, any graded race that is moved off the turf is automatically downgraded one grade. The grade can only be reinstated following a review by the committee.

What NYRA should have done was told the Graded Stakes committe to disregard this running of the Glens Falls entirely for Grading purposes and done a do-over of the race today (Sunday 9/8) at Belmont Park at the same 1 3/8 Mile distance the race was originally scheduled for, allowing the connections of those who entered the original race only to scratch to enter again without paying a second entry fee. While that might have upset the connections of those who raced in the off-the-turf running on Monday, it would have been fair to those specifically looking to run in the original race last Monday.
