Saratoga: Joyful Victory has surgery following injury in CCA Oaks

Joyful Victory, the multiple-stakes-winning 3-year-old filly who finished fourth as the favorite in the Kentucky Oaks, underwent knee surgery Friday at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Kentucky to remove a chip out of a knee, trainer Larry Jones said.

Jones said he believes Joyful Victory came out of her last-place finish in the Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga with the injury. Jones said that Joyful Victory could return to his barn in September, but that she would not run again until next year.

“We’ll take her to Fair Grounds and get her ready for next year,’’ Jones said.

Joyful Victory began her 3-year-old season with dominant victories in the Honeybee and Fantasy stakes at Oaklawn Park. After running fourth in the Kentucky Oaks, Joyful Victory finished second as the favorite in the Mother Goose.

Havre de Grace still on target for a Saratoga stakes

Jones said that Havre de Grace, beaten a nose by Blind Luck in the Delaware Handicap two weeks ago, is on schedule for a start at Saratoga, but a decision on which race she would run in has not been made.

Originally, Jones and owner Rick Porter wanted to run Havre de Grace against males in the Woodward here on Sept. 3, but they are also keeping the Personal Ensign on Aug. 28 – a race that Blind Luck is likely to run in – as an option. Jones said the goal is to keep Havre de Grace in the running for older female championship honors as well as Horse of the Year.

“We want to try win the championship for the fillies and we also had Horse of the Year on our mind,’’ Jones said. “Now, in order to beat Blind Luck we may have to try and take her on. We were planning on taking on the boys in the Woodward if we came out of the Delaware Handicap the way we wanted to and all. We thought in order to be Horse of the Year we needed to beat the boys somewhere so [the Woodward] looked like the ample time to do it, but now that’s up in the air.’’

Jones said Porter will make the ultimate decision on whether Havre de Grace runs in the Woodward or the Personal Ensign.
