SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Hungry Island pulled off a significant upset here last summer when she knocked off Winter Memories at 9-1 in the Grade 2 Lake Placid.
Hungry Island will try to do it again when she meets Winter Memories, Tapitsfly, Zagora, and others in Saturday’s Grade 1, $600,000 Diana at 1 1/8 miles.

Hungry Island, who won the Grade 2 Distaff Turf Mile on Derby Day, finished third behind Tapitsfly and Winter Memories in the Grade 1 Just a Game at Belmont on June 9.
Trainer Shug McGaughey said that Hungry Island broke a bit flat-footed and had to be ridden along the first part of the race, which compromised her finish.
“It took her out of her game plan a little bit,” McGaughey said. “I don’t know that anybody was going to beat Tapitsfly that day. She caught a hard, fast course and she flew the last part of it. But she’s the kind of filly that usually breaks and you got to throttle her down. That day she didn’t. I think going a mile and an eighth might help her, might hurt Tapitsfly a little bit.”
John Velazquez will ride Hungry Island in the Diana.
Best Bets
LORD CHELSIE has been away since February but he has speed and the rail, and given the general lack of pace in this opener he should be able to take advantage of this pace advantage, as long as he breaks alertly and outruns OMINOUS THOMAS for the lead; past success over this strip adds to the appeal. OMINOUS THOMAS failed to make the lead in a shorter race that was loaded with speed last time; back at six furlongs today, and this is a much better race flow for him.
