Santos has fractured ribs

Jose Santos suffered hairline fractures to three ribs and was very sore in the kidney area as the result of a spill at Aqueduct on Saturday. He hopes, however, to be back in the saddle by the end of the week.

Santos was aboard Every Trick when the horse took a misstep and stumbled about 50 yards from the wire in the sixth race. Santos was hurled hard to the ground, and he said later that a horse kicked him in the kidney area.

Santos, 42, was taken to North Shore Hospital, where X-rays revealed the fractures. He took off his remaining two mounts on Saturday and all of his mounts Sunday.

Santos said he planned to take off all six of his mounts on Tuesday's Veterans Day program at Aqueduct and that he would inform his agent, Mike Sellitto, on Tuesday whether he would take calls for Thursday's card.

Santos said Monday that he was "very sore" but that "I feel a lot better," than on Sunday. "Hopefully, if I continue to feel better I'll be riding by the end of the week."
