Santa Rosa: Victoryasecret steals Luther Burbank on front end

Favored Victoryasecret ($4.60) scored her third straight win as she set leisurely early fractions and held off four rivals through the stretch to win the $60,400 Luther Burbank Handicap at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa on Sunday.

Victoryasecret, who began her winning streak with an allowance victory on the turf, had captured the Alameda County Fillies & Mares Handicap on the dirt at Pleasanton in her last start. She returned to the turf for the race against older fillies and mares Sunday.

Jockey Kevin Krigger put her on the lead with a 24.17 opening quarter, then slowed things down with a 25.50 second quarter and 25.65 third quarter. He cut her loose with her fastest quarter of the day (22.82) as four rivals tried to challenge her in the stretch, but she withstood their challenge to win the 1 1/16-mile race by a neck over longshot Bleach Blonde, who finished well along the rail. U R All That I Am was another 1 1/2 lengths back as she put her nose in front of Lady Railrider at the wire.

“He pretty much stole the race,” winning trainer Chuck Jenda said of Krigger’s performance. “You can’t let a good horse go that slow for so long. It worked out for us.”

Jenda said Krigger never deviated from what was "Plan A" for the race.

“The only thing I told him was that we were in the one hole, which kind of forced our hand,” said Jenda. “I said if he felt they were going too fast to get to the outside and just relax her.”

Krigger nave had to do that as the 6-year-old Victory Gallop mare had things her own way in scoring her eighth victory in 18 starts. She earned $32,850 for the Linden Trust, raising her career total to $217,740.
